Design

Various woodworking projects in my own small carpentry workshop have been good therapy for years while I was working as the Executive Director of One Way Mission. The hobby has freed my thoughts from other worries and given me strength for work.

In the fall of 2017, I designed and made a “Captain’s Cabinet” for my home. I made another one when my daughter wanted one similar to hers. I developed the same model and built a tall “Captain’s Cabinet”. The nautical-themed cabinet and cabinet received so much good feedback that we decided to try to see if we could use this design to raise funds for the mission.

With a businessman, we decided to explore the possibility of starting to produce cabinets professionally and sell them on the furniture market for the benefit of the mission. We asked for quotes from a couple of carpentry companies, but the price skyrocketed. You couldn't have a cabinet professionally built for less than 7,000 euros, and when you add all the other costs and the desired profit, the price would rise to nearly 15,000 euros. No one would buy a cabinet at that price.

Making a captain's locker and a lower piirong is a laborious craft, but the material costs are not mind-boggling. What if we started making these products as a therapy for pensioners, the unemployed, people with substance abuse problems, etc. This way, the activity would produce well-being and at the same time provide financial help to those in greatest need. That is where the idea of starting a therapy workshop in Espoo came from.

Now pensioners, the unemployed, etc. are making lockers and piirongs as volunteers. The proceeds of the work are used to support, among others, poor families with children in Espoo and people in various situations of need, as well as orphans in, for example, India and Uganda. This way, we can lend a helping hand in our hometown and at the same time support missionary work.

Below are a few models of our products and their prices. They are handmade from real birch, no chipboard or machine production. By purchasing a piece of furniture from Terapiapaja, you are also supporting people's recovery and One Way's work to help those in various situations, both in Finland and in developing countries.

Since the products are mainly made by volunteers, the proceeds are significant for the mission.
